Energy Simulation, Thermal Analysis, and Green Building Design
In contemporary architecture, the role of design extends far beyond form and aesthetics. Creating smart, energy-efficient, and environmentally responsible buildings is now a vital component in the development of sustainable cities. A leading example of this progressive approach is the energy simulation and optimization project for the School of Pharmacy at the University of Dublin.
This project aimed to elevate the building’s design by focusing on energy performance, thermal comfort, and environmental impact. By leveraging one of the industry’s most advanced simulation tools-DesignBuilder- the team combined real-world data, scientific modeling, and international standards to set a new benchmark for sustainable educational facilities.
DesignBuilder was more than just a modeling tool, it served as the analytical core of the project. With its powerful capabilities in 3D modeling, thermal simulation, daylight analysis, energy forecasting, and ventilation assessment, the software enabled the team to evaluate and refine dozens of design scenarios with precision
The simulation results revealed major improvements in energy efficiency, offering both environmental and economic benefits. Notable achievements include:
The objective of this project was to assess the energy consumption of the School of Pharmacy building at the University of Dublin in compliance with ASHRAE standards. To achieve this, the various factors influencing the building’s thermal performance; including construction materials, lighting systems, occupancy type, and HVAC systems, were defined in accordance with ASHRAE regulations and guidelines. The building’s thermal behavior was subsequently analyzed using DesignBuilder software.
The results obtained indicate that the building demonstrates acceptable performance with respect to energy conservation standards.
This project goes beyond traditional energy analysis, it stands as a real-world example of data-driven sustainable design. Leveraging advanced simulation tools empowered the design team to anticipate building performance before construction and optimize it based on real data. This proves that sustainable architecture is not just an ideal, but a measurable and scientific process.
The energy simulation for the Dublin School of Pharmacy represents the intersection of technology, energy science, and architectural creativity. Not only did it succeed from an engineering and environmental standpoint, it also serves as an inspiring model for designing smart, human-centered, and eco-conscious buildings worldwide. Its success lies in a steadfast commitment to sustainable design principles and evidence-based decision-making.
