The National Library of Oman is one of the country’s most iconic cultural institutions. Situated in Muscat’s hot, arid climate, the building presented several energy challenges; particularly in cooling demand and the integration of natural and mechanical ventilation systems. This study was carried out with the goal of improving thermal performance, reducing energy use, and enhancing user comfort, all while adhering to the core principles of sustainable design.
To model the building’s energy behavior, we used DesignBuilder, a powerful simulation platform built on the EnergyPlus engine.
This allowed for detailed thermal and environmental analysis, including:
Simulations helped identify inefficiencies and guided the development of tailored strategies to improve energy performance, particularly during peak summer months.
Cooling Demand: Estimation of cooling load requirements during peak hot seasons
Airflow & Natural Ventilation: Assessment of airflow efficiency through optimized window placements and airflow paths
